Etiquette and Culture

Many yoga studios offer an atmosphere of total calm, quiet and peacefulness from the minute you walk in the door and until you leave. Low lighting and soft new age music may contribute to a tranquil environment. Still Hot Yoga is not exactly one of those studios. Our attendance can be high and with a lot of bodies comes a lot of energy and activity. This is to be expected and some of us even find it exhilarating. We play music in the lobby and yoga room before and between classes and we encourage conversation. In contrast to the stereotypical serene and tranquilizing yoga studio described above Still Hot Yoga is a dynamic and stimulating place.

None of this is to suggest that we don’t also value and appreciate comfortability. We strive to make our studio friendly, supportive and encouraging to all. We try to foster an atmosphere of respect and consideration. We may not be able to provide a sedate environment but we certainly want everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed. In addition to the social culture we also try to maintain a high level of physical comfort and cleanliness.

With that in mind I present these suggestions for behavior that will contribute to a culture of mutual respect and consideration:

Arriving and Signing In

  • Please finish cell phone conversations before entering the lobby (*see note below).
  • Write your name on the sign-in sheet as soon as possible and step out of the way so that others may sign in.
  • Inform your instructor of any serious health problems or injuries before taking a class.
  • Keep lively conversations away from the front desk as long as people are signing in and conducting business.

Dressing Rooms

  • Please give shower priority to those students who are leaving a class. Only shower before a class if there are no leaving students waiting to shower.
  • Always take VERY BRIEF showers.
  • Do not wash your clothes in the shower.
  • Cell phones may be used in the dressing rooms for brief, quiet calls.
  • Be finished in the dressing room before the start of the next class.


  • (I shouldn’t have to spell out considerate bathroom behavior but here goes anyway…)
  • Always wash your hands after using the bathroom.
  • Do not use the bathrooms for putting on makeup, brushing your teeth, shaving, etc.
  • Assume that there is always someone waiting to get in, especially in the last few minutes before a class.
  • Do not use cell phones in the bathroom (it WILL slow you down).

Yoga Room

  • If entering the room while people are still in savasana from a previous class BE QUIET!
  • Conversation is allowed in the yoga room before class provided nobody is still in savasana from a previous class.
  • Please be in the yoga room and ready to begin BEFORE the scheduled class start time.
  • Only enter the studio with clean bare feet.
  • Leave watches, cell phones, pagers, purses, keys, dangling or bulky jewelry, etc. in the dressing room.
  • Do not wear perfume, cologne or other smelly stuff into the yoga room — showers are available before and after class.
  • Bring only PLAIN WATER (in a non-glass container) in the yoga room.
  • Stay on your yoga mat and towel as much as possible.
  • Never move somebody else’s mat (instructors may do this).
  • Be willing and prepared to move your mat to accommodate other students before class starts.
  • Try to stay in the room for the entire class, including through the full final Savasana.
  • Leave the yoga room QUIETLY as long as any one person is still in Savasana.

* Many people consider cell phone usage in close quarters to be rude and inconsiderate. Please don’t reinforce that perception. Long or loud phone conversations should always be conducted outside. Do not use cell phones in the lobby, bathrooms or yoga room. That means cell phones may only be used in the dressing rooms and since the dressing rooms are small and often crowded you should be as quiet and discreet as possible. Many people would like to ban the use of cell phones completely but you can help us avoid that by being considerate.

Eric Jennings practices and teaches yoga in the style and method originated by Bishnu Ghosh, acclaimed Indian physical culturist. He holds certifications from Ghosh Yoga College of India (2016), Yogic Physical Culture Academy (2013) and Bikram Yoga, Inc. (2001). He has studied with Muktamala Mitra, Jared McCann, Mary Jarvis, Tony Sanchez, Marlysa Sullivan, William Huffschmidt, Yoganand Michael Carrol and Bikram Choudhury.
